Spawn 10 x 14 watercolour

CA$800.00

This painting is sold, but don’t worry; I’ve made it available as an Art Print in my RedBubble Shop.

“Spawn” is an original painting I did of an invented landscape reminiscent of the Scottish moors. My background in animation sometimes surfaces in my paintings, and I am very fond of wordplay. In this piece I explore the collective noun for umbrellas - spawn - and the themes of release, freedom and hope in adversity. In richly pigmented watercolors a tiny figure stands on a moorland, wearing a yellow raincoat. She allows her umbrella to escape in the wind brought by lush purple clouds, a rain storm approaching. The lone umbrella gives birth to seven more, a spawn of umbrellas aloft in the sky. The whimsical nature of flying umbrellas is a gift of freedom and hope, even in turbulent times. Indeed the idea for this painting came to me while I was struggling with Covid. The whimsy is carried by the expressive treatment, pigments given permission to run and spread, mixing with one another, within the boundaries that I set. It’s controlled chaos, warm and cool colours give the painting a sense of movement. The gold and green of the landscape support the vibrant purple in the sky, which in turn draws the eye to the tiny yellow pop at the center of the scene: the raincoat. This is a pure watercolour painting: all whites are the whites of the paper, no white paint was used. I used quite a few advanced watercolour techniques to create this piece including glazing, lifting, masking, negative painting and wet-in-wet. This painting is for someone who loves and appreciates imagery with a mood. Ideal artwork for any living or working space. See the timelapse video below to watch me paint it.

Watercolour, 10.25 x 14.125” (26 x 36 cm) with thin white border, painted with professional light-fast pigments on 100% cotton paper.
