Hint of Spring 17.825 x 12" watercolour

CA$1,200.00

This is an original studio painting, the fourth in a series of larger pieces in soft, muted tones, inspired by some of my “spring melt” pleinair sketches. At first it seems to be a winter scene, but although the city is blanketed by snow, the first glimmer of spring is evident in the buds on the tips of the tree branches. The mix of indigo, manganese blue and quinacridone rose provide the base cool and warm tones that I feel in the beginning of early spring in Montreal’s Parc Lafontaine, while walking my dog Chuck. We can see the original old style streetlamps, park benches and the lookout in the distance as we look down into the snow-filled north pond: all features of Parc La Fontaine. The silhouette of the buildings behind the treeline along Rue Rachel is quite typical of the architecture of Plateau Mont-Royal. It was a bright day in early March when I did the pleinair ink wash sketch I used for reference, just below freezing temperature; barely warm enough to paint without mittens for ten minutes! This is a pure watercolour painting: all whites are the whites of the paper, no white paint was used. I used quite a few advanced watercolour techniques to create this piece including glazing, lifting, masking, negative painting and wet-in-wet. This painting is for someone who loves Montreal and Canada, and a calm and peaceful mood. Ideal artwork for any living or working space.

Watercolour, 17.825 x 12", made with professional light-fast pigments on 100% cotton paper. The painting is signed by me, JC Little, on the front and has the title and date on the back. I will include a certificate of authenticity with this painting. It will be packaged with an archival sleeve, with stiff cardboard backing on both sides, and bubble wrap to protect it, inside a box. To avoid waste, where ever possible I will re-use mailers and other packaging materials. It’s recommended to frame it behind glass, with an acid-free matte, to preserve the painting from deterioration. Display away from direct sunlight.
